Understanding what artificial intelligence has to offer you and your organization.
With exponential technological advances, artificial intelligence
has developed the ability to perform certain tasks that humans perform. As with any open-ended leap forward, there is a lot of uncertainty in attitudes and in levels of understanding of what the technology is able to do. Some might view this as a threat towards their careers; others see it as an opportunity to free themselves from repetitive, simple, and less sophisticated tasks - which then provides them more time to be involved in value-added and experience-oriented work.
Artificial intelligence is leveraged in various industries to help make employees more efficient and cost-effective. Many leading law firms use AI to streamline the task of reviewing documents as well as assisting with legal research. The technology empowers attorneys to spend more time on complex tasks and legal procedures, and significantly less time on repetitive tasks.
IBM, for example, is seeking to design a system that answers employees’ questions, assisting them in adapting to their new positions. A new member of an organization for example normally lacks internal information relevant to the organization he/she is now part of. The system then will provide training, suggestions, names of locations and colleagues, as well as contact information.
Like any other evolving technology, AI is facing obstacles that prevent organizations from fully relying on it for complex tasks. For example, it is mainly capable of performing one task at a time. And in order to perform the task, AI needs to consume a considerable amount of data to function. And with that comes the challenge of updating the AI platform with appropriate data that is continuously developing, in order to produce the desired outcome.
Artificial intelligence is showing potential to empower you to do your job more efficiently. With its ability to perform repetitive, simple, and less sophisticated tasks, it could allow you to focus on the more complex tasks that require human intelligence, knowledge, and focus.
Although AI technology has not yet reached its full potential, the future appears promising. For many, the opportunity will lie in determining how AI will work for you.
